Shopify
Connect your Shopify store to betterfound.ai in one click. You approve access on Shopify's own screen, and we never ask for your password. No code is needed to install the widget either: it drops in through the Theme Editor.
Connect your catalogue
One-click connect (recommended)
- In the betterfound.ai dashboard, go to Data Sources and click Shopify under Connect your store
- Enter your store address, either
your-storeoryour-store.myshopify.com - Shopify opens its own approval screen for the Betterfound app. Review the access and click Install
- You're returned to Data Sources. betterfound.ai creates your product source, tests it, and imports your store policies automatically
Betterfound asks for read-only access to two things: your products (read_products) and your store policies (read_legal_policies). It can't change your store, see orders or customers, or make payments.
How access is protected
Typing a store address doesn't grant anything. Access is only granted by Shopify, after someone signed in to that store approves it:
- Shopify checks who you are. The approval screen is on the store's own Shopify admin. Only the store owner, or staff with permission to install apps, can approve.
- Every approval is verified. When Shopify sends you back, betterfound.ai checks Shopify's signature. It also checks a one-time code that is tied to your betterfound.ai account, expires after 10 minutes and can't be reused, and that the store matches the one you started with. If any check fails, nothing is saved.
- Only owners and admins can connect. In betterfound.ai, only owners and admins can connect or reconnect a store.
- Tokens stay private. Shopify's access token is stored encrypted, used only on our servers, and never shown in the browser.
Advanced: connect manually
For developers, custom setups or your own Shopify app credentials, use Advanced (developers / custom API) on the Data Sources page.
betterfound.ai reads your products through the Shopify Storefront API (GraphQL). You need a Storefront API access token — a read-only public token that exposes products, collections, and metafields.
Manual step 1: generate a Storefront API token
- In Shopify Admin, go to Settings → Apps and sales channels → Develop apps
- Click Create an app and give it a name (e.g. "betterfound.ai")
- Under Storefront API, enable:
unauthenticated_read_product_listings,unauthenticated_read_product_inventory,unauthenticated_read_collection_listings - Click Install app and copy the Storefront API access token
Manual step 2: add the data source in betterfound.ai
In the betterfound.ai dashboard, go to Data Sources → Add data source and select Shopify. Enter:
- Shop URL —
your-store.myshopify.com - Storefront API token — the token you just generated
betterfound.ai will fetch your first 250 products, auto-map the schema, and open the mapping review.
Install the widget on your theme
Option A — Theme Editor (no code)
- In Shopify Admin, go to Online Store → Themes → Customise
- Click Add section → Custom HTML / App embed
- Paste your betterfound.ai snippet into the HTML field
- Save and publish
Option B — theme.liquid (manual)
Edit layout/theme.liquid and paste the snippet before </body>:
<script src="https://your-dashboard-domain/api/widget/pf.js" async></script>
<product-finder data-api="https://your-dashboard-domain" token="YOUR_WIDGET_TOKEN"></product-finder>Metafields support
betterfound.ai can read Shopify metafields alongside standard product fields. In the schema mapping step, map any metafield namespace/key to betterfound.ai fields like tags, description_detail, or vendor_note.
Collections as categories
betterfound.ai automatically maps Shopify collections to the category field. Shoppers can filter by collection in the chat ("show me cameras under £500 from your Mirrorless collection"). No configuration needed.
